Prescott Was Arizona's Capital
Before Phoenix Was a Grid on a Map.The Saloons Came First. The Laws Came Second. The Ghosts Never Left.
A 90-minute walk through 14 haunted landmarks in downtown Prescott. Originally researched stories from Arizona's first territorial capital.
Why This Tour
Prescott wasn't always the charming little mountain town people think it is. Before it became a weekend getaway with antique shops and craft cocktails, this was a rough-and-tumble territorial capital full of saloons, ambition, and people who didn't always play by the rules. Some of them, it turns out, never really left.
At 5,300 feet, Arizona's first capital sits on Whiskey Row, a block of brick-and-stone saloons rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1900 consumed the originals in a single night. Every building on this street carries 150 years of frontier history, political scandal, and stories that most visitors walk right past without knowing.
On this 90-minute walk through downtown, you'll visit 14 haunted landmarks: from the Palace Saloon (Arizona's oldest bar, pouring since 1884) to the Hotel Vendome ("the most haunted place in town") to corners of Whiskey Row that most visitors overlook. Every story is originally researched from archival sources. No scripts. No recycled Wikipedia pages. Just real history, told by guides who know these streets and the people who haunt them.
This is not a haunted house. It's Arizona's most haunted downtown. And we know every story on every street.
What You'll Discover
Palace Saloon
Pouring since 1884. Arizona's oldest bar has survived fires, prohibition, and generations of owners. A few of the former patrons still seem to show up.
Hotel Vendome
Known locally as 'the most haunted place in town.' The Hotel Vendome's reputation is earned, documented, and deeply unsettling.
Hassayampa Inn
The tour's final stop and Prescott's most elegant ghost story. The story that stays with people long after they leave town.
Courthouse Plaza
Arizona's territorial capital started here. The Yavapai County Courthouse has witnessed everything from frontier justice to political scandal. What happens after dark is another story.
Old Firehouse Plaza
On July 14, 1900, Whiskey Row burned. The Great Fire consumed an entire block. The fire is long out, but the plaza remembers.
Elks Opera House
Built to bring culture to the frontier. Over a century later, some performances continue long after the curtain has fallen.
